A bookkeeping error on South Korean exchange Bithumb caused a sharp flash crash in the BTC/KRW pair on July 23. The exchange's internal ledger briefly showed hundreds of thousands of bitcoins in user accounts, while its on-chain reserves stood at just 41,843 BTC.
Fake Balances Fuel Sell-Off
Users spotted the inflated balances and rushed to sell. Screenshots circulated on social media showing unusual holdings and rapid sell orders. Market participants described the glitch as an operational breakdown rather than a simple display error.
The sell pressure overwhelmed the order book. Liquidity dried up as bids vanished across multiple price levels. Bitcoin on Bithumb briefly traded at around 81 million KRW, far below the global price. The move was purely supply-driven, not linked to macroeconomic or on-chain events.
Ledger vs. On-Chain: A Dangerous Gap
The incident exposed a core risk of centralized exchanges: internal databases can temporarily override blockchain constraints. User balances became spendable before reserve verification, threatening liquidity if multiple users tried to withdraw at once.
Although Bithumb's on-chain holdings are relatively transparent, the glitch showed that a faulty ledger could create enough virtual supply
to crash the order book within minutes. South Korean lawmakers have labeled the event a structural failure and called for formal audits. Regulators are expected to examine whether the exchange's internal controls meet legal standards.
