Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan says bitcoin is still in its early stage until it reaches $500,000, where it would be 'mature'. He calls $1 million 'absolutely' possible as BTC competes with gold's $18T market.

Bitwise Asset Management's Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan has laid out a bold framework for bitcoin's trajectory, arguing that the cryptocurrency must first hit $500,000 to be considered 'mature', with a path to $1 million 'absolutely' achievable.

$500K: The Threshold Between 'Early' and 'Mature'

In a blog post published Tuesday, Hougan acknowledged that bitcoin has already surged roughly 100% year-to-date, pushing it past its previous all-time high. Still, he insists the rally is just beginning. “It may pull back — it’s come so far, so fast — but $100K feels like it could be right around the corner,” he wrote, reassuring investors that there is still time to enter the market.

Hougan defined $500,000 as the demarcation point for bitcoin's maturity based on a simple comparison with gold. Currently, the total store-of-value market, comprising gold and bitcoin, stands at approximately $20 trillion — $18 trillion for gold and $2 trillion for bitcoin. If bitcoin were to achieve parity with gold, capturing half of that market, its market cap would reach roughly $10 trillion.

With about 20 million bitcoins in circulation and roughly one million more to be mined over the next century, Hougan calculated that a per-coin price of $500,000 would give bitcoin a market cap equal to gold's. “Until then, it’s still early,” he stated.

Gold Market Undersized? Bitcoin May Expand the Pie

Hougan went further, predicting that bitcoin will not simply replace gold but actually grow the overall store-of-value market as governments ramp up debt and currency creation. “Could we see $1 million bitcoin? Higher? Absolutely. But $500K feels like a good start,” he concluded.

His comments reflect a growing institutional conviction that bitcoin's role as a digital store of value will deepen with time, especially as spot ETFs and macroeconomic uncertainties drive demand. While some analysts caution that a five-fold surge from current levels could take a decade or more, Hougan's framework offers a clear reference point: until bitcoin reaches $500,000, the asset is still in its early innings.
