Bitwise Asset Management has filed a registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for the Bitwise Uniswap ETF, a fund designed to track the price of Uniswap's governance token, UNI, while covering the fund's operating expenses and liabilities. If approved, this would be the first exchange-traded fund focusing solely on Uniswap, directly opening a regulated gateway for traditional investors to gain exposure to decentralized finance (DeFi).
Uniswap's Central Role in the DeFi Ecosystem
Uniswap is the largest decentralized exchange built on Ethereum, and its native token UNI ranks among the top 40 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, according to The Block's price data. UNI holders can vote on protocol changes, making the token essential for governance. For investors seeking exposure to the DeFi sector, UNI is a key asset.
The filing comes at a time when the U.S. regulatory environment for digital assets has notably improved. President Trump has reaffirmed his goal to position the U.S. as the "crypto capital" of the world. Meanwhile, SEC Chair Paul Atkins and CFTC Chair Michael Selig launched "Project Crypto" to update rules governing digital assets, further boosting investor confidence.
ETF Structure and Implications
The Bitwise Uniswap ETF will be managed by Coinbase Custody Trust Company, LLC, which will handle custody of the UNI tokens. Staking is not currently included, but Bitwise indicated this could change in the future. The ETF allows investors to bypass the complexities of managing wallets and private keys, marking another step toward mainstream adoption of crypto ETFs.
However, the proposal awaits SEC approval. UNI's price has recently fallen by about 15%, reflecting the inherent volatility of the crypto market. Bitcoin and other major assets have also experienced significant declines, underscoring systemic risks.
If ultimately approved, the Bitwise Uniswap ETF could fundamentally change how investors approach DeFi, with UNI serving as a central player in this new investment landscape.
