The world's largest asset manager, Blackrock, released its first-quarter financial results for 2024 on Friday, revealing a record $10.5 trillion in assets under management (AUM), an increase of $1.4 trillion year-over-year. The firm's spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF), the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), continues to dominate the U.S. market.

IBIT Nears 270K BTC Holdings

As of April 11, IBIT held approximately 269,314 BTC, with a notional value exceeding $18.9 billion. Blackrock CEO Larry Fink described IBIT as 'the fastest growing ETF in the history of ETFs' and stated he is 'very bullish on the long-term viability of Bitcoin.' Fink also expressed pleasant surprise at retail demand for the fund.

Authorized Participants Expand to Nine

Last week, Blackrock filed an amendment to its IBIT prospectus, revealing the fund now has nine authorized participants: ABN AMRO Clearing USA, Citadel Securities, Citigroup Global Markets, Goldman Sachs, Jane Street Capital, JP Morgan Securities, Macquarie Capital (USA), UBS Securities, and Virtu Americas. This diverse AP lineup enhances IBIT's market depth and liquidity.

Eyes on Spot Ether ETF

Blackrock has also filed an application with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to launch a spot Ether ETF. While some optimism surrounds potential SEC approval by the May deadline, skepticism is growing. VanEck CEO Jan Van Eck recently expressed doubts, expecting his firm's application to be rejected in May. Reports indicate the SEC may attempt to classify Ether as a security, but Fink believes Blackrock can still launch a spot Ether ETF even under that classification.

Circle Integrates Blackrock's BUIDL Fund

On April 11, stablecoin provider Circle introduced smart contract capabilities that enable holders of the Blackrock USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund (BUIDL) to exchange their shares for USDC through Circle. This development bridges traditional asset management with decentralized finance.

Blackrock's aggressive push into digital assets underscores its strategic vision and is driving mainstream institutional adoption of cryptocurrencies. The market will watch closely for the SEC's decision on the Ether ETF and further growth in IBIT's Bitcoin holdings.
