BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, expects the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to approve its spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF), the iShares Bitcoin Trust, this Wednesday, January 10. According to Fox Business, the firm has secured over $2 billion in capital to support the launch of the ETF.
Eleven Spot Bitcoin ETFs Await Approval
The SEC faces a deadline on January 10 to rule on the joint spot bitcoin ETF proposal from Cathie Wood's Ark Invest and 21Shares. Analysts widely expect the regulator to approve multiple applications simultaneously. Currently, a total of 11 spot bitcoin ETFs are vying for approval, including the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust, Bitwise Bitcoin Trust, VanEck Bitcoin Trust, WisdomTree Bitcoin Trust, Invesco Galaxy Bitcoin ETF, Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Trust, Valkyrie Bitcoin Fund, Hashdex Bitcoin ETF, and Franklin Bitcoin ETF. Once the SEC approves the 19b-4 exchange rule changes and issuers finalize their S-1 prospectuses, trading can commence.
$2 Billion War Chest and Authorized Participants
BlackRock has named Jane Street and JPMorgan as the authorized participants for its iShares Bitcoin Trust. The asset manager has amassed over $2 billion in launch capital, signaling strong institutional confidence. Meanwhile, last-minute opposition has emerged: nonprofit Better Markets submitted a letter to the SEC warning that spot bitcoin ETFs could cause “financial carnage and massive investor harm.” However, many market participants dismiss these concerns, citing the long-term benefits of regulated crypto exposure. VanEck's director of digital assets noted that investors often overlook the transformative impact of spot bitcoin ETFs over time.
Market Optimism vs. Regulatory Caution
SEC Chair Gary Gensler has repeatedly cautioned about risks in the crypto space, but the approval of spot bitcoin ETFs would mark a watershed moment for mainstream adoption. If BlackRock's product gets the green light, it could unlock trillions of dollars in capital from traditional finance. Do you think the SEC will approve BlackRock's spot bitcoin ETF on Wednesday?
