Robert Mitchnick, Head of Digital Assets at BlackRock, discussed on Bloomberg ETF IQ the key drivers behind the success of the IBIT Bitcoin ETF. He highlighted that initial demand came from retail and investors, followed by steady progress in wealth advisor and institutional adoption. Many institutions view Bitcoin as a diversification tool due to its low or even negative correlation with traditional assets. The declining volatility further enhances its appeal. About a dozen Bitcoin ETFs compete in the market, but overall demand remains strong, and the industry is still in early stages.

BlackRock Executive Unpacks Bitcoin ETF IBIT Success Drivers

Robert Mitchnick, BlackRock's Head of Digital Assets, recently provided an in-depth analysis of what propelled the rapid rise of its spot Bitcoin ETF (IBIT) during an appearance on Bloomberg ETF IQ. Mitchnick described the success as a confluence of factors: "Out of the gate was retail and investor demand. Now, more recently, we've seen steady progress of more wealth advisor adoption, more institutional adoption." He noted that IBIT's investor base includes both first-time crypto investors and long-term Bitcoin holders who are leveraging the ETP wrapper for portfolio optimization.

Institutional Adoption Still Early, Approval Timelines in Quarters

When asked about the level of institutional acceptance, Mitchnick stated, "We're still early." ETF approvals typically take years, but some firms are fast-tracking the process. "We're talking about quarters, not months," he clarified. "Slowly but surely, you've seen an acceleration, particularly in the last couple of months, of more notable firms lowering barriers, granting approvals to their advisors to use these." This gradual but steady trend indicates growing institutional comfort with Bitcoin ETFs.

Declining Volatility and Low Correlation Become Key Attractions for Institutions

Mitchnick pointed out that Bitcoin's volatility has declined recently, making it more appealing for institutions seeking diversification. "There's no question it's relatively novel technology. Even though the volatility has come down, it's still volatile, but at the same time its risk and return drivers are markedly different from most of the rest of the assets in a traditional portfolio, and that's important." He emphasized that institutions focus heavily on Bitcoin's correlation with other assets—whether near zero or even negative in some periods—because the portfolio construction case becomes very compelling. Currently, about a dozen Bitcoin ETFs compete in the market, but demand remains robust. "Many of them have been very successful, too. Obviously, IBIT has been the leader by a fair margin. But there's been such demand that it's been exciting, and lots of products in the space is a good thing," Mitchnick concluded.
