Blackrock, the world's largest asset manager, released its first-quarter 2024 financial results on Friday, revealing a record $10.5 trillion in assets under management (AUM), an increase of $1.4 trillion year-over-year. The firm's spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF), the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), continues to dominate the U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF market.
IBIT Nears 270,000 BTC Holdings
As of April 11, IBIT's Bitcoin holdings stood at approximately 269,314 BTC, with a notional value exceeding $18.9 billion. This positions IBIT as the largest spot Bitcoin ETF by assets. CEO Larry Fink recently called IBIT “the fastest growing ETF in the history of ETFs,” adding that he is “very bullish on the long-term viability of Bitcoin” and was “pleasantly surprised” by retail demand for the fund.
Nine Authorized Participants Bolster Liquidity
Last week, Blackrock filed an amendment to the IBIT prospectus, disclosing nine authorized participants (APs): ABN AMRO Clearing USA, Citadel Securities, Citigroup Global Markets, Goldman Sachs, Jane Street Capital, JP Morgan Securities, Macquarie Capital (USA), UBS Securities, and Virtu Americas. The expanded AP roster enhances the ETF's liquidity and market-making capabilities.
Ether ETF Ambition Faces Regulatory Hurdles
Blackrock has also filed an application with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to launch a spot ether ETF. While some optimism surrounds potential SEC approval by the May deadline, skepticism is mounting amid reports that the SEC may classify ether as a security. VanEck CEO Jan Van Eck expressed doubt, predicting his firm's application will be rejected in May. Larry Fink, however, believes Blackrock could still proceed with a spot ether ETF even if ether is deemed a security.
Circle Integrates BUIDL for Seamless Conversion
On April 13, financial technology firm and stablecoin issuer Circle introduced smart contract capabilities enabling holders of the Blackrock USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund (BUIDL) to exchange their shares for USDC via Circle. This innovation provides institutional investors with on-chain liquidity and underscores the growing synergy between traditional finance and digital assets.
Blackrock's continued expansion into crypto—from dominating the Bitcoin ETF market to exploring ether products and collaborating with Circle—signals a paradigm shift in institutional adoption. As the world's largest asset manager doubles down on digital assets, the line between traditional and crypto finance continues to blur.
