U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) extended their remarkable winning streak on March 27, marking a ninth consecutive session of net inflows. The group added a net $89.57 million—roughly $90 million—driven almost entirely by BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), which captured $107.89 million in new capital.

Bitcoin ETF Details: IBIT Dominates as BITB Bleeds

Among the 11 Bitcoin ETFs, IBIT was the sole major recipient of fresh funds. However, the day was not without a drag: Bitwise’s BITB experienced an outflow of $18.32 million, partially offsetting IBIT’s inflows. The remaining ten Bitcoin ETFs reported zero net flow. Total trading volume for Bitcoin ETFs surged to $1.87 billion, indicating robust investor engagement.

Despite the positive net flow, the total net assets of Bitcoin ETFs declined to $97.22 billion, a drop of approximately $1.78 billion from the prior session. This decline was attributed to a pullback in the price of Bitcoin during the trading day, not capital flight. The divergence between rising inflows and falling net assets underscores the impact of market volatility on ETF valuations.

Ethereum ETFs: Persistent Outflows, Total Assets Dip Below $7 Billion

The Ethereum ETF cohort continued its losing streak. On March 27, the group recorded a net outflow of $5.89 million, extending the pattern seen in recent weeks. Grayscale’s Ethereum Trust (ETHE) bled $4.90 million, while Fidelity’s FETH saw a smaller withdrawal of $996,090. As a result, total net assets for Ethereum ETFs slipped below the $7 billion threshold, closing at $6.84 billion.

Market observers attribute the persistent outflows to a lack of short-term catalysts for Ethereum, such as compelling network upgrades or DeFi revival narratives. Institutional investors appear to favor Bitcoin’s simpler store-of-value story amid macroeconomic uncertainty.

Market Outlook: Can the Bitcoin ETF Momentum Last?

The nine-day inflow streak for Bitcoin ETFs has brought cumulative capital inflows to several billion dollars. Analysts point to several supportive factors: expectations of a Federal Reserve pause in rate hikes, the upcoming Bitcoin halving event (expected in April 2025), and a growing appetite for regulated crypto exposure among traditional investors. However, the decline in total net assets despite net inflows serves as a cautionary note: price volatility can quickly erase notional gains.

For Ethereum ETFs, the path to recovery may require stronger on-chain activity or a regulatory green light for staking features. Until then, the divergence in capital flows between Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs is likely to persist.
