Block Inc., formerly Square, has officially launched a Bitcoin payment system on its Square network, enabling over 4 million U.S. merchants to accept Bitcoin payments via the Lightning Network. Spearheaded by CEO Jack Dorsey, the initiative aims to integrate Bitcoin into mainstream commerce and accelerate cryptocurrency adoption for everyday transactions.
Zero-Fee Strategy and Merchant Onboarding
To incentivize adoption, Block Inc. has waived all processing fees for Bitcoin transactions until 2027. Merchants can enable the feature by simply updating their settings in the Square dashboard. This zero-fee policy significantly lowers the entry barrier for small and medium-sized businesses to accept digital currencies.
Lightning Network Enhances Efficiency
The Lightning Network solves Bitcoin’s scalability issues by enabling fast and low-cost micropayments. Merchants receive fiat settlements in real time without waiting for blockchain confirmations, while consumers enjoy near-instant payment experiences. Block Inc. has previously integrated Bitcoin buying and sending in Cash App; the merchant-side upgrade marks a major expansion of its crypto ecosystem.
Industry Impact and Market Reaction
Analysts believe this move could intensify competition in the payments industry, particularly challenging traditional giants like Visa and Mastercard. The zero-fee model for Bitcoin payments may force other processors to adjust their pricing structures. Following the announcement, Bitcoin’s price saw a modest uptick amid optimism about mainstream commercial acceptance. However, attention remains on regulatory compliance, volatility risks, and consumer protection.
Block Inc. is not alone in exploring Bitcoin payments. Recent developments include Coins.ph integrating Bitcoin into the Philippines' QRPh system and Tando enabling Bitcoin transfers to Kenyan phone numbers via mobile money. These trends indicate that cryptocurrency is transitioning from an investment asset to a practical payment tool.
