Blockchain.com, one of the oldest and most prominent cryptocurrency platforms, has appointed former Goldman Sachs and Point72 executives to senior roles as it prepares for a potential initial public offering (IPO), according to a report by Bloomberg on Friday.
Company Origins and Legacy
Founded in 2011 by Ben Reeves, Nicolas Cary, and CEO Peter Smith, Blockchain.com began as a blockchain analytics tool before evolving into wallet services, trading, and institutional offerings. The platform has facilitated over $1 trillion in transactions and serves millions of users globally. Its blockchain explorer and wallet products have become cornerstones of crypto infrastructure.
Funding and Valuation Rollercoaster
Early investors included Baillie Gifford and Lightspeed Venture Partners. The company has raised a total of $1.09 billion, including a valuation of $14 billion in 2022. However, the market downturn slashed its valuation to under $7 billion by 2023, according to Bloomberg. The firm also faced significant headwinds, including a $270 million loss linked to the collapse of hedge fund Three Arrows Capital (3AC), which prompted layoffs.
New Leadership Team
The recent appointments include Justin Evans, former head of Goldman Sachs' crypto investment banking unit, as Chief Financial Officer (CFO), and Mike Wilcox, ex-CFO of Velocity Global, as Chief Operating Officer (COO). Evans, who advised on Coinbase's 2021 direct listing, told Bloomberg that the hires align with Blockchain.com's efforts to "take steps necessary to be a public company."
These moves follow a $110 million funding round led by Kingsway Capital in 2023. Bloomberg notes that Blockchain.com maintains partnerships with institutions like Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, which are increasingly courting crypto clients for IPOs.
Regulatory Climate and Competitive Landscape
Blockchain.com's IPO push coincides with a favorable U.S. regulatory climate under crypto advocate Donald Trump. Competitors such as Circle and Kraken also aim to go public, while Wall Street banks expand crypto advisory services. Evans highlighted the improved policy environment compared to his tenure at Goldman Sachs, calling Blockchain.com's growth "dynamic."
"Joining at this stage of the company's journey presents growth opportunities and enables me to contribute in meaningful ways to the next chapter of the company," Evans told Bloomberg.
Broader Context
The company has facilitated over $1 trillion in cumulative transactions, serving both retail and institutional clients. Despite setbacks, it remains a top crypto exchange and infrastructure provider. The appointment of seasoned finance veterans signals a strategic pivot toward regulatory compliance and public market readiness. As the crypto industry matures, Blockchain.com's IPO could be a bellwether for the sector's integration with traditional finance.
