Blockchain, the well-known cryptocurrency software provider behind over 29.5 million non-custodial wallets, has officially launched its first hardware wallet, named Lockbox. The device was developed in partnership with Ledger, the leading hardware wallet manufacturer, featuring custom firmware and design tailored specifically for Blockchain's ecosystem.

Design and Integration with Blockchain Wallet

Lockbox is not a generic hardware wallet; it is exclusively tethered to Blockchain's flagship wallet software. This allows users to manage both online and offline assets from a single interface. Peter Smith, CEO and co-founder of Blockchain, stated: “We've created an elegant software and hardware integration that offers more functionality than previously existed in our space. We're thrilled to offer the Lockbox to Blockchain users so they can easily manage their funds online and offline seamlessly.”

The device closely resembles Ledger's Nano series but features a blue chassis with the Blockchain logo. Its dimensions are 98mm × 18mm × 9mm, and it supports Windows 7+, macOS 10.9+, Linux, and Chrome OS. Similar to the Ledger Nano, Lockbox requires Google Chrome or Chromium for operation. Additionally, it is FIDO certified, meaning it can serve as a security key for third-party services like Dropbox, Google apps, and GitHub.

Security Architecture and Pricing

Blockchain emphasizes that Lockbox uses a dual-chip architecture to guarantee cryptographic protection. Private keys remain secured behind a user-defined PIN at all times. The product website claims: “Our dual chip architecture guarantees cryptographic protection so you can store your crypto worry-free. Your private keys stay protected behind your secret PIN.”

Lockbox is available for pre-order starting October 25, 2018, at a price of $99. Payment options include BCH, BTC, PayPal, Visa, and Mastercard. The package includes a USB cable, mnemonic phrase card, and setup instructions. Blockchain has also created a dedicated Lockbox support page to guide users through the pairing process.

Market Context and Competition

The hardware wallet market has grown significantly since the 2017 bull run, driven by numerous high-profile cryptocurrency thefts. In 2018 alone, new entrants such as CoolWallet and Ellipal have emerged. Lockbox's primary competitors include Trezor and Keepkey. Blockchain believes its deep integration with its own wallet software gives Lockbox a unique edge, combining convenience with robust security.

Pascal Gauthier, President of Ledger, commented: “Stories about cryptocurrency hacks continue to dominate headlines. It’s obvious that security must be top of mind for all stakeholders in the crypto space.” He further noted that Lockbox's FIDO capabilities broaden its appeal beyond just crypto storage.

Overall, Lockbox marks Blockchain's strategic move from pure software wallet services into the hardware security sector. By leveraging Ledger's expertise, the company hopes to offer a trustworthy product that seamlessly fits its existing user base.
