On June 24, 2020, the blockchain explorer and data analytics firm Blockchair announced the launch of a new privacy tool called the “Privacy-o-Meter.” According to Blockchair, the service aims to combat blockchain surveillance companies by exposing privacy weaknesses in cryptocurrency transactions.
How Privacy-o-Meter Works
Privacy-o-Meter is designed for Bitcoin users and developers to evaluate the privacy level of their transactions. By simply entering a transaction hash, users receive a visual privacy score. The tool warns against common behaviors that degrade privacy, such as address reuse, sending round amounts (e.g., exactly 1 BTC or 10 BTC), and using UTXOs with high input replicability. These heuristics are precisely what surveillance firms like Chainalysis employ to deanonymize users.
Blockchair’s official Twitter account stated: “Many of you have heard about blockchain surveillance companies. Privacy-o-Meter is the first step to defend yourself against heuristics they use.” The clear scoring and warnings empower users to identify privacy leaks and adopt better practices or privacy-enhancing technologies like coin mixers.
Supported Assets and Future Plans
Currently, Privacy-o-Meter supports only Bitcoin (BTC), with “other cryptos coming soon.” Blockchair CEO Nikita Zhavoronkov responded to the Bitcoin Cash (BCH) community’s enthusiasm, saying: “We will launch BCH support as soon as we’ve implemented Cashshuffle and Cashfusion detection.” Cashshuffle and Cashfusion are BCH-native mixing protocols that greatly enhance transaction privacy.
Beyond BCH, Blockchair plans to roll out additional features such as address clustering/tagging and other insights similar to those offered by Chainalysis. This will give users a more comprehensive view of on-chain data and its privacy implications.
About Blockchair
Founded in 2016, Blockchair is a popular multi-chain data platform supporting over 15 blockchains, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Cardano (ADA), and more. Users can search hashes, addresses, blocks, embedded text data, and view unique metrics like halving counters. The broad blockchain support positions Privacy-o-Meter as a potential cross-chain privacy assessment tool in the future.
In an era of growing privacy awareness, Blockchair’s Privacy-o-Meter provides a critical “ruler” for ordinary users to measure the privacy risk of their on-chain activities. As more chains are integrated and clustering analysis matures, this tool could reshape the dynamic between users and blockchain surveillance companies.
