On June 24, 2020, the blockchain explorer and data analytics firm Blockchair unveiled a new tool called the “Privacy-o-meter.” Designed to combat blockchain surveillance companies, the service provides a visual privacy score for Bitcoin transactions, highlighting key behaviors that can erode user anonymity.
How Privacy-o-Meter Works
Users simply paste a Bitcoin transaction hash into the tool, and it returns a privacy score based on several heuristics: address reuse, input/output patterns, and round-number amounts. According to Blockchair, “it warns you if you're doing things like reusing addresses or sending round amounts that lead to deteriorating your privacy.” The tool is currently available for Bitcoin (BTC) only, with support for other cryptocurrencies “coming soon.”
Background and Motivation
Founded in 2016, Blockchair has been a popular service offering data insights for over 15 blockchains, including Ethereum (ETH), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Cardano (ADA), and others. As blockchain surveillance firms like Chainalysis continue to expand, Blockchair sees the Privacy-o-meter as a first line of defense. In a tweet, the company stated: “Many of you have heard about blockchain surveillance companies. Privacy-o-meter is the first step to defend yourself against heuristics they use.”
Future Plans and Community Response
Blockchair CEO Nikita Zhavoronkov confirmed that Bitcoin Cash (BCH) support will launch once Cashshuffle and Cashfusion detection are implemented. The BCH community reacted positively, with one user writing: “You rock, keep up the great work my friends.” Additionally, Blockchair plans to introduce address clustering/tagging features in the future, similar to offerings from analytics firms.
The Privacy-o-meter represents a significant step in empowering individual users to assess and improve their transaction privacy. By making surveillance heuristics transparent, Blockchair gives crypto users a practical tool to navigate the ongoing battle between blockchain transparency and financial privacy.
