The BRICS economic bloc is accelerating its de-dollarization efforts with a new currency initiative that could reshape global finance. Alexander Babakov, Deputy Chairman of the Russian State Duma, stated on the sidelines of the India-Russia Business Forum that the group is working on creating a fundamentally new currency, which will be discussed at the upcoming BRICS leaders' summit scheduled for August in South Africa. This news has sparked intense interest among cryptocurrency enthusiasts and financial analysts, as the move hints at a potential fusion of traditional finance with blockchain technology.
From National Currency Settlements to a Unified Digital Asset
Babakov explained the two-step strategy: “The transition to settlements in national currencies is the first step. The next one is to provide the circulation of digital or any other form of a fundamentally new currency in the nearest future. I think that at the BRICS [leaders’ summit], the readiness to realize this project will be announced, such works are underway.” Currently, BRICS members — Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa — have already begun settling trade in their own currencies. For example, Russia and China agreed to use the Chinese yuan for payments with emerging economies, and China signed a bilateral deal with Brazil to facilitate trade using their national currencies. Additionally, several countries including Argentina, Iran, Indonesia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt have expressed interest in joining the bloc.
Commodity-Backed Design and Geopolitical Implications
Babakov left open the possibility that the new currency could be backed by gold and other commodities such as rare-earth elements or land. This design would make the BRICS currency fundamentally different from fiat currencies like the dollar and euro, which are backed only by the issuing governments. “New Delhi, Beijing, and Moscow are the nations that now institute a multipolar world that is endorsed by the majority of governments. Its composition should be based on inducting new monetary ties established on a strategy that does not defend the U.S. dollar or euro, but rather forms a new currency competent of benefiting our shared objectives,” Babakov said, criticizing the existing global financial system as serving the interests of Washington and London rather than the broader global community.
What This Means for Crypto Markets
While the technical details of the BRICS currency remain unclear, the emphasis on a “digital or any other form” suggests potential integration of blockchain technology and cryptocurrency features. If BRICS launches a digital currency backed by a basket of commodities, it could challenge existing stablecoins and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), offering a new model for decentralized value transfer. The August summit will be closely watched for concrete roadmaps, technical standards, and the role of member states like China, which already has a robust digital yuan project. For crypto investors, any move by BRICS toward a digital asset could signal a shift in global reserve currency dynamics and create new opportunities for cross-border payment solutions.
As the BRICS nations continue to expand their influence and attract new members, the proposed common currency represents a bold step toward reducing reliance on the US dollar. Whether it becomes a functional reality or remains a geopolitical statement, the initiative underscores the growing demand for alternative financial infrastructures in a multipolar world.
