A British man, Chris, has gotten back 61 bitcoins — now worth about $4.4 million — after a 12-year legal fight with the UK crypto exchange Intersango, which shut down in 2014.

Chris bought the bitcoins in 2011 and left them sitting with the exchange instead of moving them into a self-custodial wallet. Intersango, once called Britcoin, was among the first UK exchanges to offer bitcoin trading against the pound.

Ryan Sweetnam, financial litigation director at CEL Solicitors, helped make the recovery happen. The firm spent four months submitting the required paperwork to a US court and, after that, secured the return of the funds through negotiation.

Chris said he now checks the wallet holding the bitcoins around 20 times a day.
