Quantum computers are not here yet, but the Bitcoin community is already preparing. BTQ Technologies has deployed the first working version of BIP 360 on the Bitcoin Quantum Testnet v0.3.0, moving a theoretical security proposal into a live, testable network. Miners and researchers can now experiment with post-quantum safeguards.
P2MR: Plugging the Taproot Leak
Taproot, activated in 2021, brought advanced smart contract capabilities to Bitcoin but introduced a subtle risk: transactions could expose public keys on-chain. A mature quantum machine could use Shor's algorithm to derive private keys from those public keys and steal funds. BIP 360 counters this with Pay-to-Merkle-Root (P2MR), which hides the public key inside a Merkle tree while still allowing Lightning, BitVM, and other applications to function normally.
BTQ bypassed the slow pace of the main Bitcoin Core team. The testnet v0.3.0 includes full BIP 360 logic, letting miners and developers create and spend quantum-safe coins using simple command-line tools. Blocks are mined every minute, enabling rapid bug detection and iteration.
The $490 Billion Vulnerability
A recent report from Galaxy Digital estimates that roughly 7 million BTC (worth nearly $490 billion) currently have exposed public keys on the blockchain. Most come from early addresses or reused P2PK outputs. If quantum computing breaks through, those coins could be stolen. BTQ's testnet aims to prove that a fix is possible today.
At the core is Dilithium, a lattice-based signature scheme widely considered quantum-resistant. The testnet already supports Dilithium-signed transactions, giving users a full end-to-end experience.
Mining Pool and Regulatory Deadlines
BTQ is not purely altruistic. It plans to operate a mining pool with a 3% fee and expects to collect 100,000 BTQ tokens in the first year. Over 50 miners have already joined, and the network has processed 100,000 blocks.
Timing matters. U.S. and European regulators have set 2026 as the deadline for post-quantum cryptographic (PQC) standards. BTQ's testnet acts as a canary in the coal mine for the entire Bitcoin ecosystem, validating a migration path before the main chain moves.
