Bunq said its crypto trading volume has passed €100 million in the first year after launching bunq Crypto in April 2025, with about 500,000 trades completed over that period. The European neobank also reported a 41% increase in total signups during 2026, pointing to continued retail demand for banking and investing services inside a single app.

The figures show how quickly trading activity can build once digital assets are placed directly inside a mobile banking product. Users do not need to open separate exchange accounts or move money between different platforms as often. That lowers friction, and the app becomes the main access point for both routine banking and investing.

Crypto trading gains traction inside the banking app

Bunq said its crypto service was among the first offered by a European bank. The company is presenting the feature as part of a wider push to make digital assets easier to access, rather than treating crypto trading as a specialist product built only for experienced market participants. For customers already using the app for payments and savings, the familiar setting appears to have helped drive adoption.

The company also said user behavior suggests crypto is not being used only for speculative trades. It is also becoming part of broader portfolio construction for retail users. Joe Wilson, Chief Evangelist at bunq, said the place where money grows should feel safe, understandable, and familiar, adding that investing should not feel like a leap into the unknown and that the platform is focused on giving users clarity and control.

Stock baskets aim to simplify retail portfolio building

Alongside the crypto update, Bunq introduced Stocks Baskets, a feature that lets users group equities and ETFs into themed portfolios such as technology, sustainability, or widely held stocks. These baskets can be customized and funded through recurring contributions, giving users a way to build exposure over time without selecting each security one by one.

The product fits a broader move toward guided or semi-automated retail investing. Choosing individual stocks can be a barrier, especially for newer investors. A basket structure reduces that complexity by replacing constant security selection with predefined themes or user-created groupings. Bunq said the feature is designed to remove guesswork and support long-term wealth building.

Wilson said users respond well to tools that let them invest in the way they prefer, adding that bunq Crypto had a strong first year and that many users are making portfolio building part of daily financial life from within the bank’s security environment.

Safety Shield now covers payments, stocks, and crypto

At its Update 31 event, Bunq also said it expanded its Safety Shield feature across payments, stocks, and crypto. The system lets users cancel transactions that appear suspicious, with funds held for up to 24 hours before completion. The idea is to give users time to react if a transaction does not match what they expected.

The expansion shows how risk controls need to follow the same path as product integration. Once a bank combines payments, investments, and digital assets in one interface, the line between those activities becomes less distinct. Bunq is extending similar safeguards across asset classes and moving security features closer to the user experience, so customers have more direct control while still retaining protection against fraud or mistakes.

With crypto trading, stock baskets, and a shared layer of transaction controls inside one app, Bunq is building beyond payments and savings into a broader financial platform for retail users.
