ByteDance’s Doubao is advancing product plans in the personal assistant segment, according to Phoenix Technology, citing Sina Tech, in a report published on Sept. 29.
People familiar with the matter said Doubao has carried over the personal agent strategy used for its mobile assistant last year. In April, the company began internally testing a related exploratory product codenamed Spell. The project was mainly led by the Doubao mobile assistant team, but it was not formally released to the public because of factors including the launch of the Doubao phone.
Spell to be integrated more deeply with Doubao
The source said Doubao is speeding up the external rollout of its personal agent capabilities as personal assistant products such as Muse and Instinct gain attention overseas. The plan is to connect the Spell project more closely with the Doubao product.
The new product will be jointly handled by the Spell project and the Doubao dialogue team, and is expected to launch publicly in the near term.
Holiday push to rebuild a Muse-style product
Separately, Dachang Ribao reported that Doubao’s product line received a new assignment during the Mid-Autumn Festival period: quickly rebuild a product benchmarked against Muse, complete a demo version by Sept. 30, and submit it for internal review and testing. The report said the full Doubao product line, along with multiple upstream and downstream teams, joined the holiday development effort.
Earlier rollout timeline for the mobile assistant
Previously, a technical preview version of the Doubao mobile assistant made its first appearance in December 2025, debuting on a ZTE Nubia M153 engineering prototype. In September 2026, the consumer version was formally released on the Nubia NaviX Ultra.
The report said Spell can be viewed as an extension of the personal agent capabilities Doubao built on mobile devices into a standalone app form.
