Law enforcement and financial regulators have repeatedly flagged that these machines bypass traditional banking oversight, enabling anonymous cash-to-crypto conversions and cross-border transfers without identity checks. Recent criminal cases have placed crypto ATMs at the center of several high-profile fraud schemes.
In an official statement, the government said: “Our goal is to fully prohibit these machines, which have become the leading tool for scammers to deceive victims and for criminals to turn illicit gains into cash, in order to protect Canadians.” The ban is expected to apply to all crypto ATMs operating within Canadian borders.
From First Bitcoin ATM to Nationwide Ban
Canada holds a historic place in crypto hardware: the world's first Bitcoin ATM was installed at a Vancouver coffee shop in 2013.
