According to onchain analyst ZachXBT, a Cardano holder lost roughly $6.05 million while attempting to swap ADA into the stablecoin USDA. What appeared to be a routine conversion instead turned into an extreme slippage event after the trade collided with a shallow liquidity pool.

A dormant wallet returned with a massive swap

The incident involved a Cardano wallet that had reportedly been inactive since 2020. Once reactivated, the wallet executed a swap of 14.4 million ADA, valued at about $6.9 million, on the Minswap decentralized exchange. In return, the trader received only about 847,000 USDA, a result that reflected the severe price distortion caused by the trade size.

The core problem was the pool depth. Reports indicated that the ADA-USDA pool held only around $1.5 million in liquidity at the time. That amount was far too small to absorb a swap of this scale without dramatic slippage. As the trade pushed through, USDA’s price surged far above its intended $1 peg, temporarily creating one of the most extreme stablecoin dislocations seen in recent Cardano DeFi activity.

USDA briefly spiked to extraordinary levels

Price tracking varied across platforms, highlighting the challenges of recording rapid onchain dislocations. Some market data services such as Coingecko showed a more limited move, with USDA peaking around $4.85. However, data cited from Dexscreener and observations from onchain monitors including Lookonchain suggested the token briefly traded above $60, with some reports placing the spike in the $60 to $70 range.

That kind of movement is extraordinary for any stablecoin and underscores just how fragile pricing can become in thin pools. In effect, the trader’s own order overwhelmed available liquidity and pushed the market wildly off balance. Rather than acquiring a dollar-pegged asset at or near par, the swap executed at progressively worse rates as the pool was consumed.

Arbitrage traders moved quickly to close the gap

Once the mispricing appeared, arbitrageurs moved in almost immediately. By buying and selling against the distorted pool, they captured the spread and helped force the token’s price back toward equilibrium. According to Dexscreener’s 15-second interval chart, the most intense phase of the price spike lasted about 20 minutes before cooling off.

This rapid correction is typical in decentralized markets when an obvious pricing anomaly emerges. However, while arbitrage helps restore balance, it does nothing to reverse the original trader’s executed swap. In practice, the loss had already been realized by the time the market normalized.

A costly lesson in slippage and execution risk

The episode stands as a stark reminder that decentralized infrastructure does not eliminate user-side execution risk. Smart contracts may process transactions exactly as coded, but they do not protect traders from using the wrong pool, trading too much size into limited liquidity, or underestimating how quickly pricing can deteriorate during a large swap.

For large transactions, liquidity assessment is often as important as the asset selection itself. A pool with only a fraction of the intended trade size can produce devastating outcomes, especially when dealing with assets expected to behave predictably, such as stablecoins. In this case, the expectation of receiving a relatively stable dollar-denominated asset was undermined by the simple fact that the market depth was nowhere near sufficient.

Broader implications for Cardano DeFi

Beyond the immediate loss, the incident also renews scrutiny on the maturity of Cardano’s DeFi infrastructure, particularly around stablecoin markets and available liquidity. A thin pool can function under normal conditions, but it may break down quickly when hit with concentrated volume. That creates a structural challenge for users moving large amounts of capital across decentralized venues.

The event also highlights the limitations of blockchain design in preventing costly mistakes. Immutable ledgers and decentralized rails can ensure transparent settlement, but they cannot stop a trader from submitting an economically damaging order. In that sense, the failure here was not a protocol outage but a market-structure problem compounded by human execution error.

As Cardano’s DeFi ecosystem continues to develop, market participants are likely to focus more closely on liquidity quality, stablecoin depth, and execution safeguards. For users, the practical takeaway is straightforward: before entering a large onchain swap, it is essential to examine pool size, estimate slippage, and consider splitting orders into smaller trades when necessary. Without those precautions, even a straightforward stablecoin conversion can become a multimillion-dollar mistake.
