Casper Association releases a technical roadmap targeting a $16 trillion RWA market, featuring EVM integration, X402 micro-payments, and post-quantum cryptography by 2027.

The Casper Association unveiled a multi-year technical roadmap on May 12, positioning the Casper network as a foundational infrastructure for regulated asset tokenization and the growing machine-to-machine economy. Michael Steuer, President and CTO of the Casper Association, presented the strategy at the Digital Finance Forum in Bermuda, describing it as a shift from 'native crypto hype' to the operational infrastructure required to bring trillions of dollars of real-world assets (RWAs) on-chain.

Bridging the Ethereum Ecosystem: EVM Compatibility and ERC-3643

A central pillar of the roadmap is the introduction of full Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatibility. While Casper's foundation is built on WebAssembly (Wasm), adding EVM support allows developers to transfer existing Ethereum-based smart contracts and tools—such as Solidity and MetaMask—onto Casper without modifications. The Association describes this as 'one chain, two execution environments, zero fragmentation.'

Targeting an estimated $16 trillion market for tokenized RWAs, the roadmap integrates regulatory compliance directly into the protocol. Casper is aligning with the ERC-3643 standard, which currently manages approximately $28 billion in on-chain assets. This move is designed to attract institutional players seeking a compliant, scalable blockchain solution.

Machine-to-Machine Micro-Payments: X402 Standard

The roadmap also focuses on autonomous systems. By implementing the open X402 payment standard, Casper aims to become the first native Wasm Layer 1 blockchain supporting machine-to-machine programmable micro-payments over HTTP. This capability enables AI agents to autonomously pay for data queries or computational power using stablecoins, leveraging 'smart accounts' to manage spending limits and permissions—all without human intervention.

Steuer commented: 'Few are building the infrastructure that will bring the next billion users, the next trillion dollars of tokenized assets, or the first billion machines onto the network. For users, the blockchain should be invisible. One tap. Done.'

Pioneering Quantum Resilience

One of the key differentiators in the roadmap is Casper's proactive approach to quantum safety. The network, designed from inception to support multiple key algorithms, already runs Ed25519 and secp256k1 in production. Steuer stated that Casper intends to introduce post-quantum cryptographic algorithms in 2027, running alongside current classical public-key cryptography. This dual-path system aims to provide a smooth migration path for network participants.

'Our design has allowed us to support different key algorithms from day one,' Steuer told Bitcoin.com News. 'We believe quantum resilience will become a critical part of blockchain infrastructure, and we want to have it in place before it becomes an industry-wide emergency.'

Phased Rollout: 2025-2027 Timeline

The Casper Association confirmed that initiatives will be delivered in stages through 2027. The X402 micro-payment system is expected to launch within weeks. Later in 2026, the network will introduce EVM compatibility and regulatory-compliant security tokens. Transaction privacy features and the final deployment of quantum-resistant algorithms are scheduled for completion by 2027.

This roadmap builds on the Casper 2.0 upgrade released in mid-2025, which introduced deterministic finality and a multi-VM execution layer, laying the technical foundation. The tokenized RWA market has surged 20x over three years, exceeding $29 billion, and Casper's enterprise-grade infrastructure positions it to capture further growth as institutional adoption accelerates.
