In a recently released video titled “Legacy is Eating Crypto,” Charles Hoskinson, co-founder of Ethereum and Cardano, delivered a stark warning about the creeping influence of traditional finance (TradFi) on the cryptocurrency industry. He argued that without conscious resistance, the revolutionary promise of digital assets could be co-opted by the very systems they aimed to disrupt, leading to a future where crypto merely mimics the centralized structures of legacy finance.

Stablecoin Dominance: A Hidden Centralization Risk

Hoskinson began by focusing on stablecoins, noting that despite representing only about 10% of the total crypto market cap by value, they account for roughly 70% of all on-chain transaction volume. “From a crypto perspective, ETH and Bitcoin take a backseat to USDC and USDT,” he said. “These are, by volume, the value transfer mechanisms of our industry.” The problem, according to Hoskinson, is that paper-backed stablecoins like USDT and USDC are subject to the regulatory controls of specific jurisdictions. Their issuers (Tether and Circle) can freeze addresses, block transactions, or halt issuance at the behest of governments, injecting a centralized point of failure into the decentralized ecosystem. This control, he warned, could dictate the direction of DeFi economies, undermining the very essence of crypto — permissionlessness and censorship resistance.

Algorithmic Stablecoins: A More Decentralized Alternative?

Hoskinson suggested that algorithmic stablecoins, which rely on on-chain algorithms and smart contracts rather than centralized reserves, might offer a solution. While acknowledging past failures (such as LUNA), he argued that algorithmic stablecoins are more aligned with the decentralized ethos of cryptocurrency, as they are free from central authority influence. He called for more research and development in this area to create robust, trust-minimized stable assets.

Bitcoin ETFs: Wall Street’s Invisible Hand

The Cardano founder also criticized the celebration around spot Bitcoin ETFs, warning that Wall Street could exert growing control through these financial instruments. He laid out a hypothetical scenario: if Bitcoin splits into two chains (A and B), and spot ETF providers back chain B while selling their holdings in chain A, the price of chain A would plummet. Miners, seeking the highest returns, would likely switch to mining chain B, causing a collapse of hash power on chain A. In this way, a small group of wealthy parties regulated by legacy institutions could effectively determine the direction of Bitcoin through economic incentives. “Bitcoin is not invincible,” Hoskinson said. “If Wall Street controls the ETFs, they can change miner behavior and steer the network.”

The Bedrock of the Revolution: Participation Without Fear

Near the end of the video, Hoskinson delivered a powerful call to action: “You should be able to participate in markets without fear of censorship and exclusion. This is the bedrock of the revolution that is cryptocurrencies, and none of this means anything if we hand all those things to legacy actors.” He urged the community to support decentralized infrastructure, algorithmic stablecoins, and censorship-resistant DeFi protocols to preserve the original vision of crypto — a permissionless, borderless financial system that empowers individuals.

Hoskinson’s remarks have sparked intense debate. Some echo his concerns, warning that the industry is sleepwalking into a centralized trap. Others argue that asset-backed stablecoins and ETFs are necessary steps for mainstream adoption and regulation, and that the two can coexist with decentralization. The discussion highlights the fundamental tension at the heart of crypto: how to embrace institutional capital and legitimacy without sacrificing the very attributes that make crypto unique.
