Yet a growing number of companies are turning this byproduct into a profitable asset—Bitcoin mining. Chicago-based EZ Blockchain designs mobile data centers that run on gas that would otherwise be wasted. Founder Sergii Gerasymovych shared insights on the business’s economics, challenges, and educational efforts.

The Economics of Stranded Gas Mining

EZ Blockchain’s mobile units connect directly to gas pipelines at well sites, using the fuel to generate electricity for ASIC miners. This approach allows oil producers to monetize gas that would otherwise be flared or vented. “With Bitcoin mining, they can achieve prices as high as $10 per MCF—ten times what they sell it for on the pipe,” Gerasymovych noted. For small gas producers struggling with low market prices, mining offers a lifeline that can keep wells profitable.

Educating a Traditional Industry

The biggest hurdle remains education. “Oil producers need to learn about Bitcoin mining, even though the risks in their case are low,” Gerasymovych explained. In the Appalachian Basin, small gas producers require scaled-down units capable of handling 500 MCF or 2 MW. “We spent the last year developing mobile data centers for Ohio’s small producers,” he added. The company also attends industry conferences to bridge the knowledge gap.

Regional Adaptation and Challenges

EZ Blockchain splits its business into two tracks: large oil producers in North Dakota and very small gas producers in Ohio. According to Gerasymovych, “the stranded gas in North Dakota alone could power one-third of Bitcoin’s entire network.” However, large producers move slowly due to compliance and multi-level approval processes. “Even a 1-1.5 MW project requires many people and approvals,” he said. Meanwhile, in Ohio, unit capacities must be reduced to match limited gas volumes.

Competition and Future Outlook

Other players like Crusoe Energy Systems and Canada’s Upstream Data are active in the space, helping to expand the niche. Despite operational hurdles, the environmental and economic benefits are compelling. As more oil producers recognize stranded gas as a resource rather than waste, Bitcoin mining could become a standard practice in energy-rich regions.
