China’s gold imports have reached record levels this year, according to a Bloomberg report published on Sept. 22. Customs data cited in the report showed that purchases through August had already exceeded 1,000 tons, surpassing the total for all of 2025. Bloomberg said the increase was driven by a drop in international gold prices and a stronger yuan. The report also noted that the customs data series goes back to 2017. Wu Zijie, an analyst at Jinrui Futures, said strong investment demand kept domestic gold prices at a slight premium to international benchmarks, which in turn attracted imports. The figures point to sustained buying interest in China during the first eight months of the year.
