The Chinese edition of Mastering the Lightning Network has drawn attention after translator Dr. Awesome Doge detailed why he took on the project. His core point was simple: the book does not just explain that Bitcoin can be used for payments, it explains how near-instant Lightning payments actually work under the hood, from payment channels to HTLCs, onion routing, and privacy assumptions.

He said the decision followed his 2021 completion of the Traditional Chinese translation of the third edition of Mastering Bitcoin. In his view, Bitcoin on-chain is hard to use for everyday payments. A transaction can take an hour to confirm, fees can become expensive, and merchants are reluctant to accept zero-confirmation risk. His own early experience with Lightning was different. Using BlueWallet in community settings, he paid for meals and bubble tea with a few thousand sats and watched the recipient get the funds within seconds.

Breaking down the one-second payment experience

The book spans 17 chapters. According to the translator, the material covers fundamentals rather than niche topics: channel revocation, cross-channel settlement through HTLCs, and layered encryption inside Sphinx packets. Those mechanisms are not abstract theory in his telling. They are the machinery running behind a user’s quick scan-and-pay experience on Lightning.

He described Chapter 7 as one of the first major bottlenecks, saying it took him three weeks. That section follows the full life cycle of a payment channel: opening a channel, updating balances, forwarding value across channels, and settling back on-chain. Because the English text relies heavily on if-then constructions, a direct rendering into Chinese would read like legal clauses. He chose to restructure the logic into shorter sentences, keeping each sentence focused on one step in the sequence.

Why Chapters 10 and 16 stood out

Chapter 10 took even longer. Onion routing can be summarized quickly at a high level, but the book uses 40 pages to show how it is implemented. That includes Sphinx packets, shared key derivation, and layer-by-layer encryption and decryption, all tied to elliptic curve operations. He said technical translation in this area leaves little room for vague wording. In one case, he split three lines into seven to remove ambiguity, and the 40-page section took two months to finish.

Chapter 16 left a different impression. The book explains that Lightning’s privacy model differs sharply from Bitcoin’s base layer: Bitcoin transactions are public and privacy comes from obfuscation, while Lightning payments are more private but channels are public. Even without seeing the payment itself, an attacker may infer behavior by studying network topology, channel jamming, balance probing, or cross-layer deanonymization. For that reason, he argued that the common claim that “Lightning protects privacy” is only half complete.

A technical gap in Chinese-language material

He also placed the translation in the context of the 2021 crypto discussion cycle, when DeFi, NFT, and GameFi received much of the attention in Chinese-speaking markets. Lightning had little speculative appeal and very little structured Chinese documentation. There was no publisher commission and no foundation sponsorship behind the work.

His description of the finished project was narrow and technical rather than promotional: two years earlier he had translated how Bitcoin works, and now he had translated how Bitcoin is used. In that sense, the book is presented as a missing reference point for Chinese readers who want to understand what happens inside a Lightning payment that appears to clear in less than a second.
