Circle has laid out a multi-phase quantum-resistance roadmap for its Arc blockchain, saying the network’s 2026 mainnet launch will start with optional quantum-resistant wallets and upgraded signature schemes. The company said it wants users to move over gradually instead of forcing an immediate switch that could disrupt existing activity.
The plan is structured around wallets, confidential data, infrastructure, and validator protection. Circle’s position is clear: quantum resilience has to work inside live systems, not remain a research exercise. That is why the first protections are aimed at user access and transaction authorization, where operational risk is most direct.
Launch phase centers on wallets and signature upgrades
At mainnet launch, Arc will support wallets designed for post-quantum security and introduce updated signing methods meant to reduce emerging threats. Circle is keeping those protections optional at the outset. That setup is meant to let users migrate over time while keeping current operations intact.
The company framed the initial rollout as a practical deployment choice. Instead of waiting for a fully comprehensive conversion, Arc will begin by securing the parts of the system most closely tied to asset control. In effect, wallet access and transaction signing become the first line of defense.
Later stages expand to private balances and infrastructure
After launch, the second phase will extend protections to private balances and confidential transaction data. Circle said stronger encryption layers will be used to help preserve privacy against future quantum-capable attacks. One of the risks it highlighted is the “harvest now, decrypt later” model, in which attackers collect encrypted data today and wait for stronger quantum tools to break it later.
The third phase moves down the stack to infrastructure, covering cloud services and access-control systems. Circle noted that existing standards such as TLS 1.3 already support post-quantum upgrades, and Arc will be aligned with those broader industry shifts. The roadmap is not limited to onchain accounts; it also targets the systems that keep the network running.
Validator protection will be added in stages
The fourth phase is focused on validator security. Validators on Arc confirm transactions in under one second, which leaves a narrow window for attack attempts, but post-quantum signatures also demand more computing power. Circle said those upgrades will be introduced gradually rather than all at once, reflecting the trade-off between stronger cryptography and performance requirements.
Circle’s roadmap arrives as warnings around quantum computing and current encryption grow more urgent. The company pointed to recent alerts from Google and researchers at the California Institute of Technology, whose findings suggest advanced quantum systems may be able to break existing cryptography faster than previously expected. In an extreme scenario, they said systems such as Bitcoin could be compromised within minutes.
Circle also singled out wallets with exposed public keys as a higher-risk category. Arc’s design is meant to tackle those known weaknesses early, before the network reaches full scale.
