Circle announced on March 11, 2026, the launch of its Nanopayments testnet, a micropayment system leveraging USDC stablecoin for instant, gas-free microtransactions. The platform supports payments as small as $0.0001, targeting frictionless value transfer for machine economies and AI agents.
Off-Chain Aggregation and On-Chain Settlement
Legacy financial systems and conventional blockchains cannot handle sub-cent transactions due to high fixed costs and gas fees. A $0.0001 on-chain payment could incur processing expenses hundreds of times larger. Circle tackles this with off-chain aggregation and periodic on-chain batched settlement: thousands of micropayments are grouped and settled together, drastically reducing per-transaction costs. Circle also absorbs all gas expenses at the settlement layer, making transactions fee-free for users and developers at the application layer.
The system uses EIP-3009 authorization messages signed by agents. When an agent pays a merchant, the transaction is validated via API, the internal ledger updates instantly, and the merchant is notified in real time. Blockchain settlement occurs in the background without disrupting users.
x402 Standard: Account-Free Payments for Agents
Circle Nanopayments implements the x402 compatibility standard, enabling any autonomous agent or device to pay participating merchants without account registration or credit card details. This streamlines transaction flows for decentralized and automated services. Circle stated, “The financial rail for the agentic economy is here,” emphasizing its focus on infrastructure for widespread agent-driven payments.
Real-World Demo: Robot Dog Pays for Its Own Power Recharge
In a live test with robotics software developer OpenMind, an autonomous robot dog used USDC via Circle Nanopayments to recharge itself. The transaction was confirmed instantly, allowing uninterrupted operation while blockchain settlement finalized discreetly.
12 Blockchain Networks Supported; Mainnet Timeline Unspecified
As of February 2026, Circle Nanopayments runs on testnets of 12 blockchain networks: Arbitrum, Base, Ethereum, Polygon PoS, Avalanche, Optimism, Sei, Sonic, Unichain, HyperEVM, Arc, and World Chain. Any EVM-compatible network is accessible via Gateway. Developers are encouraged to build and validate business models around sub-cent, gasless payments, including pay-per-service APIs and autonomous device billing. Circle has not announced a mainnet launch date but positions Nanopayments as foundational infrastructure for future agentic and machine commerce.
