A viral post on X said Anthropic’s Claude had “cracked” a forgotten bitcoin wallet and recovered 5 BTC from a user’s old computer, worth about $395,000 at the price cited in the report. That is not what happened. Claude did not break Bitcoin’s cryptography or unlock a wallet by defeating its protections. It helped the owner search their own files, locate an old wallet backup, and use a password they had already written in a notebook.

The user, cprkrn, shared the recovery on Wednesday and described it as “the most obvious opening ever” once the situation became clear. Before that moment, the owner had spent eight weeks trying to brute-force the password to their current Blockchain.com wallet. Using btcrecover and rented compute hardware, they tested roughly 3.5 trillion password combinations.

The breakthrough came from a 2019 backup file

The successful step came only after the user made a last attempt and “dumped my whole college computer into Claude.” The assistant identified an old wallet backup dated December 2019. That file was encrypted with a password the owner already had recorded in a notebook, so the issue was not missing cryptography-breaking power. It was missing file discovery.

Once the old backup was decrypted, it revealed the same private keys controlling the current funds. That point matters. Bitcoin private keys do not change, so an older backup can still provide access to the same holdings if it contains the relevant keys. The user also disclosed the password publicly on X and said the failed brute-force effort cost about $15 in Vast.ai GPU spending. The actual recovery was, in effect, a file search rather than a successful attack on wallet encryption.

No evidence of broken Bitcoin encryption

The distinction is important because the viral framing suggested something much bigger than what occurred. According to the source material, breaking Bitcoin’s real cryptographic foundations would require either a functioning quantum computer capable of running Shor’s algorithm or a major flaw in elliptic-curve cryptography. No such flaw has emerged in 16 years of public scrutiny.

The report also referenced earlier post-quantum security coverage, which said most researchers place a cryptographically relevant quantum computer at least five to ten years away. So this incident does not point to a weakness in Bitcoin itself. It points to the value of searching old devices and backup archives with better tools.

AI may become useful in wallet recovery work

The episode highlights a practical use case for AI inside crypto.
