Cloudflare, one of the world's largest internet connectivity companies, has announced its entry into the digital payments space with the launch of Net Dollar, a stablecoin purpose-built for AI agents. The initiative aims to overhaul how autonomous agents conduct financial transactions on the internet, addressing the growing need for pay-per-use, fractional payments, and microtransactions.
Net Dollar: A Payment Rail for the Agentic Economy
According to the official release, Net Dollar is backed 1:1 by U.S. dollars and provides instant transaction settlement, including cross-border transfers. Cloudflare co-founder and CEO Matthew Prince stated: “The future of the web will be driven by pay-per-use, fractional payments, and microtransactions—tools that shift incentives toward original, creative content that actually adds value.” Net Dollar is designed to meet these exact use cases, offering the infrastructure for AI agents to autonomously execute tasks such as booking flights, ordering items on sale, or subscribing to premium content.
Strategic Partnership with Coinbase for x402 Protocol
In a parallel move, Cloudflare and cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase co-founded the x402 Foundation to advance the x402 protocol. This protocol enables agents to transfer value directly within the existing internet environment, facilitating automatic payment requests and tipping for high-quality content—eliminating friction points inherent in traditional payment rails. The partnership is expected to accelerate the adoption of agent-driven commerce.
Market Implications and the Road Ahead
As AI agents increasingly handle routine tasks—from online shopping to content subscription—legacy payment systems struggle to support high-frequency, low-value, cross-border transactions. Net Dollar fills this gap by providing a programmable, scalable, and low-cost payment layer. Industry observers believe that Cloudflare, leveraging its vast global network infrastructure, could become a critical payment hub in the agentic economy. The stablecoin unlocks new revenue models for creators, developers, and AI companies, potentially reshaping the internet’s economic foundation.
