The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) Group has officially rolled out 24/7 trading for cryptocurrency futures and options, marking a significant shift in the traditional regulated derivatives landscape. Institutional investors and professional traders can now access crypto derivatives at any time—including weekends—eliminating the gaps imposed by legacy trading hour restrictions.

During its inaugural weekend, the new continuous trading session saw over 7,200 contracts change hands, representing a notional value of roughly $50 million. Simultaneously, CME launched Bitcoin volatility futures, expanding the crypto derivatives product suite available to market participants.

Tim McCourt, Global Head of Equities, FX and Alternative Products at CME Group, stated that the launch directly responds to client demand for weekend continuous liquidity, and is designed to bridge the longstanding gap between traditional regulated venues and the always-on, 24/7 nature of the cryptocurrency market.
