CME Group, DRW Join Forces to Launch World's First Compute Futures Market Based on H100 GPU Rent

CME Group, the world's largest derivatives exchange, announced on May 12 a partnership with Silicon Data, an index provider backed by DRW Holdings, to create the first-ever compute futures market. The initiative turns the rental cost of an NVIDIA H100 GPU into a standardized, exchange-traded financial contract.

H100 Rental Index: Turning Fragmentation into a Benchmark

Silicon Data has built the world's first daily GPU usage index, tracking the hourly cost of renting a single H100 GPU on the on-demand market. The compute market today is highly fragmented: rental rates vary wildly across cloud platforms, regions, and contract terms. AI startups struggle to forecast costs. Silicon Data CEO Carmen Li stated: "The compute market today remains highly fragmented… Partnering with CME Group brings the scale, market structure, and credibility needed to transform the compute market."

DRW founder and CEO Don Wilson identified another pain point: "The lack of hedging tools has been an impediment to the exponential growth of data center spending. Launching a compute futures market is a significant solution." Global data center capex has surged into the hundreds of billions of dollars annually. Yet companies that rent compute instead of building their own capacity bear the full risk of rent fluctuations, with no financial instruments to transfer or manage that risk.

A Hedging Tool for AI: Locking Future Compute Costs

The compute futures contract operates like traditional agricultural or energy futures: it is benchmarked to Silicon Data's H100 rental index, offering a standardized vehicle for buyers and sellers to lock in prices before expiration. For AI firms, the contract caps GPU rental costs three to six months out, even if spot prices spike due to chip shortages or demand surges. Cloud providers, in turn, can short the contract to hedge against underutilization of their own compute resources.

CME Group CEO Terry Duffy described the gap bluntly: "Compute is the new oil of the 21st century. Investors need a credible futures market that provides transparency, liquidity, and effective risk management."

Market Depth Awaits Test; Launch Set for 2026

The plan still requires regulatory clearance. CME aims to launch the product later in 2026. As a CFTC-regulated exchange, CME's compliance infrastructure is not a concern. The true question is market depth: can the futures market attract enough market makers and speculators to absorb the hedging demand from AI companies? That answer will come only after the first contract trades.
