According to ChainCatcher, Molly O'Shea, founder of the technology and investment media platform Sourcery, said in a post on X that Coinbase’s AI agent has registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as an investment adviser and has its own independent financial account. The disclosure connects Coinbase’s AI-agent initiative with regulatory registration, account structure, and financial infrastructure.
AI agents and independent financial accounts
O'Shea’s statement describes Coinbase’s AI agent as more than a general automation tool. The agent is presented as having an independent financial account, while its registration with the SEC as an investment adviser places the activity in a clearer regulatory setting. The report did not provide further details on the registration process, the structure of the account, or the exact operating scope of the agent.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said AI agents are forming an independent economy. In his description, these agents buy goods and services and can also hire other agents to work with them. Because those activities involve transactions, payments, and account management, Armstrong said they require a new kind of financial infrastructure to support them.
Coinbase for Agents links trading, payments and account management
Coinbase has provided a full technology stack for this direction, covering trading, payments, and account management. The company had previously launched the “Coinbase for Agents” platform, which allows AI systems to carry out trading and payment tasks through independent sub-accounts within safety parameters set by users.
The platform covers spot trading and derivatives, and also includes future stocks and prediction markets. Under this structure, Coinbase brings account functions, transaction execution, and payment capabilities for AI systems into a single platform framework. Users define the safety framework, while AI agents operate through separate sub-accounts to complete the relevant tasks.
The information disclosed by O'Shea adds another detail to Coinbase’s work on financial infrastructure for AI agents. The core elements identified in the report are the SEC investment adviser registration, the independent financial account, Armstrong’s description of an emerging agent-based economy, and the existing Coinbase for Agents platform.
