Coinbase on Aug. 27 outlined its Agentic Finance, or AiFi, strategy, arguing that AI agents are becoming active participants in economic activity rather than simple software tools. In Coinbase’s view, these agents will need more than decision-making ability. They will also need to send and receive payments, hold assets, and move funds on behalf of users. The company split AiFi into two tracks: agentic trading and agentic commerce. Coinbase said cryptocurrencies and stablecoins can serve as the underlying financial rails because they offer round-the-clock availability, programmability, global reach, and lower-cost transactions. Coinbase said it has already launched several products for this push, including Coinbase Advisor, Coinbase for Agents, x402, and Coinbase Business. These tools are designed to support investment management, trading, and machine-to-machine payments. Coinbase for Agents can connect with AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor through MCP, letting users set trading goals, permissions, and guardrails while allowing agents to execute trades automatically once conditions are met. The company also shared usage figures for x402, its open payments standard. Coinbase said the system has processed more than 205 million transactions worth $53 million across 200,000 sellers so far, with 67% of those transactions facilitated by Coinbase. It added that USDC accounts for 99% of onchain agentic commerce volume, x402 represents 97% of agentic finance protocol usage, and most of the activity is running on Base.

Coinbase on Aug. 27 laid out its Agentic Finance strategy, shortened to AiFi, saying AI agents are gradually becoming participants in economic activity. The company said these agents may not only make decisions on behalf of users in the future, but also need the ability to pay, receive funds, hold assets, and transfer them.

Two tracks: agentic trading and agentic commerce

Coinbase divided AiFi into two main areas: agentic trading and agentic commerce. It said cryptocurrencies and stablecoins can provide financial infrastructure that is always on, programmable, global, and low cost.

In Coinbase’s view, AI agents are set to emerge as a new type of economic participant, while crypto can supply the global, 24/7, and programmable financial rails that traditional finance does not offer.

Product lineup for AI agents

Coinbase said it has already rolled out Coinbase Advisor, Coinbase for Agents, x402, and Coinbase Business to give AI agents tools for investment management, trading, and machine-to-machine payments.

Among them, Coinbase for Agents can connect to AI tools including Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor through MCP. Users can set trading goals, permissions, and guardrails, and the AI agent can execute trades on its own once those conditions are satisfied.

x402 usage figures and onchain activity

Coinbase also disclosed that x402, its open payments standard, has processed more than 205 million transactions so far, with transaction volume reaching $53 million. The system covers 200,000 sellers, and 67% of those transactions were facilitated by Coinbase.

Coinbase added that USDC currently accounts for 99% of onchain agentic commerce volume, x402 makes up 97% of agentic finance protocol usage, and related activity is running mainly on Base.
