Coinbase said in a post on X that the financial layer forming around AI agents is known as agentic finance, or AiFi, and that it covers both agentic trading and agentic commerce.
The company said AI agents can research information, make decisions, and execute actions on behalf of individuals and businesses. To do that, they need core financial functions such as making payments, receiving funds, storing value, and moving money. Coinbase said it is building tools for AI agents so they can carry out financial operations on an ongoing basis within preset goals, permissions, limits, and security boundaries.
Coinbase names four products in its AiFi stack
According to Coinbase, Coinbase Advisor, Coinbase for Agents, x402, and Coinbase Business already form the infrastructure layer for AiFi.
Coinbase said Coinbase Advisor is an SEC-registered investment adviser integrated into apps for Coinbase One users, offering portfolio analysis and guidance through a chat interface.
It also said Coinbase for Agents connects tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor to Coinbase accounts through MCP. Users can set operating conditions and security boundaries for agents, and can also create separate sandbox accounts for them.
x402 volume reaches $53 million
Coinbase said x402 is an open payment standard launched by Coinbase and now managed by an independent foundation. The standard is designed to let AI agents pay other agents, applications, and services.
As of now, x402 has processed more than 205 million transactions, with total volume reaching $53 million across 200,000 sellers, according to Coinbase. The company said it facilitated 67% of that activity. Single payments can be used for API calls, datasets, research materials, or compute resources.
Coinbase Business targets AI agent payments in USDC
Coinbase said Coinbase Business allows companies to natively receive USDC payments from AI agents. Coinbiz, it added, can help merchants sell services and content to software without relying on card credentials, manual invoicing, or payment flows built on the assumption that the customer is a human.
Eligible businesses can earn a floating 3.35% reward on idle USDC balances. Coinbase also said USDC now accounts for 99% of onchain agentic commerce transactions, while x402 represents 97% of usage across agentic finance protocols. The related activity runs on Base.
