Coinbase said in a post on X that the financial layer emerging around AI agents is called agentic finance, or AiFi, covering agentic trading and agentic commerce.
The company said AI agents can research information, make decisions and execute actions on behalf of individuals and businesses. To do that, they need core financial functions including payments, receiving funds, storing value and transferring money. Coinbase said it is building tools for AI agents so they can continuously carry out financial operations within preset goals, permissions, limits and security boundaries.
Coinbase lists its AiFi infrastructure
Coinbase said Coinbase Advisor, Coinbase for Agents, x402 and Coinbase Business now form its AiFi infrastructure.
According to the company, Coinbase Advisor is an SEC-registered investment adviser integrated into applications for Coinbase One users, offering portfolio analysis and guidance through a chat interface.
Coinbase for Agents can connect tools including Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor to Coinbase accounts through MCP. Users can set operating conditions and security boundaries for agents, and can also create separate sandbox accounts for agent use.
x402 and Coinbase Business metrics
Coinbase said x402 is an open payment standard launched by Coinbase and now managed by an independent foundation. It is designed to let AI agents pay other agents, applications and services.
So far, x402 has processed more than 205 million transactions, with $53 million in volume across 200,000 sellers, Coinbase said. The company added that it facilitated 67% of that activity. Individual payments can be used for API calls, datasets, research materials or compute resources.
Coinbase said Coinbase Business supports businesses in natively accepting USDC payments from AI agents. Coinbiz can help merchants sell services and content to software without relying on card credentials, manual invoicing or payment flows built around human customers.
Eligible businesses can earn a floating 3.35% reward on idle USDC balances, according to Coinbase. The company also said USDC now accounts for 99% of onchain agentic commerce transactions, x402 makes up 97% of agentic finance protocol usage, and the related activity runs on Base.
