In a major development for crypto infrastructure, Coinbase Cloud has teamed up with blockchain staking provider Kiln to launch a native Ethereum staking service that eliminates the previous 32 ETH minimum. Starting now, users can stake any amount of ether and earn rewards directly on the Ethereum network without needing to meet the high barrier.
Lowering the Barrier: Unlocking Staking for 99% of Holders
By integrating Kiln's onchain staking platform, Coinbase Cloud can now enable partial ETH staking for its clients. This means wallet providers like Coinbase Wallet can offer staking rewards to all users regardless of their balance. According to Coinbase, over 99% of Ethereum wallets hold less than 32 ETH, meaning the move unlocks staking for the vast majority of participants. The new solution allows these users to contribute to network security and earn yields without any minimum threshold.
Technical Collaboration: Secure and Transparent Operations
“We are thrilled to have worked with Coinbase Cloud and to welcome them as the first (non-Kiln) node operator leveraging the Kiln Onchain Staking Platform,” said Laszlo Szabo, CEO of Kiln. “This integration is unique because it allows them to enable other wallets and services, including decentralized exchanges, with the same limitless ETH staking solution that will be offered by Coinbase Wallet.”
The partial staking feature builds on Coinbase Cloud's existing staking infrastructure, which uses a multi-cloud, multi-region setup to ensure high reliability and security. All staking operations are conducted transparently onchain through audited smart contracts, providing full verifiability.
Impact and Outlook: Growing Staked ETH Ratio
Coinbase believes that removing staking minimums will encourage more individual users to participate in securing the Ethereum network while earning rewards. This comes as the staked ETH ratio continues to rise following Ethereum's recent upgrades. The service is initially available through Coinbase Wallet, with plans to expand to other platforms. By lowering entry barriers, Coinbase Cloud and Kiln are paving the way for a more decentralized and inclusive staking ecosystem.
