On August 5, 2025, Coinbase officially launched the beta version of “Embedded Wallets,” a developer-focused tool integrated into the Coinbase Developer Platform (CDP). The service provides a unified API stack that simplifies wallet creation, fiat onramp integration, token swaps, and the ability to earn up to 4.1% APY on USDC balances. According to the company’s blog post, the new tool leverages the same core security and infrastructure that powers Coinbase’s own trading products, ensuring enterprise-grade reliability for third-party applications.
Key Features and Simplified Onboarding
A standout feature of Embedded Wallets is its user-centric onboarding process. Developers can enable Web2-style authentication methods such as email, SMS, or OAuth, completely removing the need for users to manage seed phrases or download browser extensions. This significantly reduces the friction typically associated with Web3 wallet setups, making it easier for mainstream users to interact with blockchain-based applications.
Coinbase states that the unified API handles a wide range of operations: wallet generation, balance checks, token transfers, staking, and reward distributions. The wallet creation process is exceptionally fast — developers can run a single command (npm create @coinbase/cdp-app) and generate a wallet tied to an email address in under 200 milliseconds. Comprehensive documentation covers advanced features like token swaps and NFT interactions.
Security Infrastructure
All wallet operations are isolated within Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs), where private keys are securely stored and managed. Coinbase emphasizes that this architecture has been battle-tested by its own trading systems and meets stringent security standards. The self-custody nature of the wallets means users retain full control over their private keys, while the platform handles key management behind the scenes.
Free Trial and Use Cases
To accelerate adoption during the beta phase, Coinbase is offering free usage of Embedded Wallets for all Coinbase Onramp customers until September 30, 2025. The company highlighted several real-world applications, including remittance apps, decentralized finance (DeFi) marketplaces, B2B payroll systems, creator economy platforms, and gaming ecosystems. Two early partners — Zylu and Stablelink — have already integrated the technology to enable instant cross-border payments and simplified donation flows, demonstrating the tool’s versatility.
By lowering the barrier to entry for wallet integration, Coinbase aims to attract a broader range of traditional developers to build Web3-native experiences, ultimately expanding the crypto ecosystem beyond specialized audiences.
