In the early hours of June 3, Beijing time, longevity biotech startup NewLimit announced the completion of a $435 million Series C funding round. The round was led by Founders Fund, Peter Thiel’s venture capital firm, with continued participation from existing backers including Abstract Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, Nfdg, Eli Lilly Ventures, and Valor Equity Partners, and new investors Thrive Capital, Greenoaks, and Quiet Capital joining the cap table. The Wall Street Journal reported that the new funding values NewLimit at $3.1 billion, more than tripling its valuation from one year ago.

In the funding announcement, NewLimit revealed that following breakthrough research results, the company is advancing longevity medicine to human clinical trials. Its first drug, targeting alcohol-related liver disease, is expected to begin clinical trials next year. The company emphasized: “By reprogramming cell age, humans can access longer health spans, and humanity is now closer than ever to the goal of delaying or even reversing aging.”

Notably, NewLimit was co-founded by a well-known figure in the crypto world—Brian Armstrong, co-founder and CEO of Coinbase. In 2021, Armstrong joined forces with former GV partner and bioengineer Blake Byers and stem cell biologist Jacob Kimmel, collectively investing $110 million to launch NewLimit in South San Francisco.

Yamanaka Factors: The Scientific Bedrock of Cellular Rejuvenation
NewLimit’s core scientific foundation rests on a Nobel Prize-winning discovery. In 2006, Japanese scientist Shinya Yamanaka demonstrated that activating just a handful of specific transcription factors could reprogram adult cells back into a youthful, embryonic-like state—a process later named “Yamanaka Factors.” This finding earned Yamanaka the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and proved that cellular age is not irreversible.

NewLimit’s method builds directly on this concept: its drugs aim to activate specific transcription factor genes to reset the epigenome of cells to a more youthful state. While the reversibility is proven, the challenge lies in identifying the precise combination of transcription factors required to restore youthful function in different cell types. Chief Executive Officer Jacob Kimmel describes this search for effective “gene payloads” as the central task of the company. NewLimit’s strategy is to first pursue approval for a concrete disease indication and then expand to broader applications. Kimmel explained that liver disease can be viewed as an accelerated form of aging—a faster, more aggressive version of the same degenerative process everyone undergoes.

The Ultimate Race among the Super-Rich: Buying Time Itself
NewLimit is far from the only venture pursuing “immortality.” In 2022, Sam Altman invested $180 million into Retro Biosciences, a company developing drugs to rejuvenate aging cells, which recently disclosed a valuation of $1.8 billion. That same year, Altos Labs, reportedly backed by Jeff Bezos, launched with $3 billion and has since raised nearly double that amount in cumulative funding.

From Peter Thiel to Sam Altman to Jeff Bezos, the common thread is clear: those at the apex of technology and wealth are the ones pouring billions into longevity science. Thiel has openly expressed a visceral rejection of death, repeatedly arguing that “death is humanity’s greatest enemy, yet we treat it as a law of nature.” The logic behind these billion-dollar bets is straightforward—when wealth and power reach their zenith, time becomes the sole remaining adversary and the one luxury that money alone cannot buy.

Prior to this Series C, NewLimit had already completed three funding rounds, steadily moving longevity medicine from theory toward the clinic. With its first drug application on the horizon, this team—born at the intersection of crypto and biotech—is now attempting to rewrite the boundaries of the human lifespan through science.
