In the early hours of June 3, longevity startup NewLimit announced the completion of a $435 million Series C funding round. The round was led by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund, with continued participation from Abstract Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, NFDG, Eli Lilly Ventures, Valor Equity Partners, and new investors including Thrive Capital, Greenoaks, and Quiet Capital. The Wall Street Journal reported that the round valued NewLimit at $3.1 billion, more than tripling its valuation from a year ago.

In its announcement, NewLimit revealed that following breakthrough research, the company is advancing longevity medicine into human clinical trials. Its first drug candidate, targeting alcohol-related liver disease, is expected to enter clinical trials next year. Co-founder and CEO Jacob Kimmel explained that liver disease can be seen as an “accelerated version of aging” — a faster, more intense manifestation of the declines everyone experiences over time — making it an ideal proving ground for anti-aging therapies.

Reprogramming Cell Age: From Nobel Prize to Commercialization
NewLimit states: “By reprogramming cell age, humanity can achieve longer healthspan — and we are now closer than ever to the goal of delaying or even reversing aging.” The science builds on the 2006 discovery by Japanese scientist Shinya Yamanaka that activating just a few specific transcription factors could reprogram adult cells into a youthful, embryonic-like state. These factors, later named “Yamanaka factors,” earned Yamanaka the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Yamanaka’s work demonstrated for the first time that cell age is not irreversible. NewLimit’s website elaborates: “As we age, cellular function gradually declines, making us more susceptible to disease. It was once thought that aging was inevitable, but emerging science shows that aging can be reversed at the cellular level. We are building on these discoveries to develop the first drugs that restore youthful function to old cells.” The company further explains that its drugs work by activating specific transcription factor genes to reprogram a cell’s epigenome to a younger state. “We know this reversal is possible. But for each cell type, which combination of transcription factors is needed to restore youthful function remains unknown. Discovering these effective gene payloads is the core challenge of our work.”

Coinbase Founder’s Cross-Domain Bet
Among NewLimit’s co-founders is a familiar name: Coinbase founder and CEO Brian Armstrong. In 2021, Armstrong joined forces with former GV partner and bioengineer Blake Byers and stem cell biologist Jacob Kimmel, contributing $110 million to launch the company in South San Francisco. Prior to this Series C, NewLimit had already completed three funding rounds, steadily expanding its investor base.

The Billionaire Battle for Time
NewLimit isn’t alone in the quest for extreme longevity. In 2022, Sam Altman invested $180 million in Retro Biosciences, which is developing drugs to rejuvenate senescent cells and recently disclosed a valuation of $1.8 billion. Also in 2022, Altos Labs launched with $3 billion in backing reportedly from Jeff Bezos, and its total funding has since nearly doubled that initial amount.

From Peter Thiel to Sam Altman to Jeff Bezos, the biggest backers of the longevity sector are consistently ultra-wealthy individuals at the peak of technology and financial power. Thiel has openly expressed a profound aversion to death, repeatedly asserting that “death is mankind’s greatest enemy, yet we treat it as a law of nature.” The logic behind these billion‑dollar bets is straightforward: when wealth and influence have reached their zenith, time becomes the one adversary — and the one luxury — that money alone cannot buy.
