On May 7, 2026, Coinbase announced that Amazon Bedrock Agentcore Payments now includes its x402 payment protocol and wallet infrastructure. Developers can handle wallet authentication, transaction signing, and payment execution within Agentcore via a single API call, providing a managed payment path for AI agents with spending controls, compliance safeguards, and USDC transactions.

API-Driven Agent Wallets with Governance

The integration allows developers to set time-based spending limits while keeping private keys inaccessible to agents. Coinbase stated: "This helps AWS developers deploy agents that discover, make micropayments, and use services on their own. All with enterprise governance, built-in compliance, and instant USDC settlement on Base and Solana." Compliance features are handled through the Coinbase Developer Platform (CDP) Facilitator, which manages sanctions and illicit finance risks. Enterprises receive logs, metrics, and dashboards tracking each payment an agent initiates.

x402 Protocol: HTTP-Based Stablecoin Micropayments

x402 is an open payment protocol that uses the HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code for instant automated stablecoin payments. Settlement on Base with USDC takes about 200 milliseconds and costs less than a fraction of a cent per transaction. Through Coinbase's Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration, agents can access x402-compatible services from providers like Exa, Messari, and Browserbase for search, evaluations, backend setup, and real-time data without subscriptions or checkout flows.

Governed by the x402 Foundation, which includes AWS, Coinbase, and other tech and payment companies, the protocol has processed over 169 million payments across more than 590,000 buyers and 100,000 sellers in one year.
