Coinbase has integrated its x402 payment protocol into Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Payments, marking the first native crypto micropayment capability on a major cloud platform. This move gives enterprise AI agents unprecedented financial autonomy in the cloud environment.

One API Call, Instant USDC Payments

Through a single API call, businesses can now grant their AI agents the ability to pay with USDC without requiring accounts or subscriptions. The AI agents autonomously discover external services, make payments, and execute tasks — all settled on Base and Solana in approximately 200 milliseconds with fees under one cent.

The system includes built-in compliance governance: temporary budget limits can be set, and Coinbase provides AML and sanctions screening. Every transaction is recorded with a full audit trail, ensuring transparency and control.

Thousands of Services, Pay-as-You-Go Economy

Thousands of services — including Exa (real-time search) and Messari (on-chain data analytics) — are already integrated into the x402 network. AI agents can dynamically select and pay for these services on a per-use basis, bypassing traditional subscription models. Governed by the x402 Foundation, the protocol has processed over 169 million payments to date.

This integration is seen as a major step toward Agentic Commerce. Coinbase CEO has previously predicted that the AI agent economy could surpass human commerce in scale. Combined with recent developments like MoonPay enabling crypto purchases within ChatGPT and AI agent payments reaching $73 million, crypto payments are rapidly embedding into the AI ecosystem.

For developers, this means they can now build truly autonomous AI applications that earn and spend money independently. Coinbase's move not only reduces operational complexity for AI enterprises but also paves the way for mass USDC adoption in cloud computing.
