Coinbase (Nasdaq: COIN) announced on May 7, 2026, the integration of its x402 payment protocol and wallet infrastructure into Amazon Bedrock Agentcore Payments. This development provides AWS developers with managed payment capabilities for AI agents, including spending limits, compliance safeguards, and instant USDC settlement on Base and Solana.

Single API Call for Full Wallet Functionality

Through a single API call, developers can now handle wallet authentication, transaction signing, and payment execution within Amazon Bedrock Agentcore. The integration allows time-based spending limits while keeping private keys inaccessible to the agents themselves. Coinbase stated: “This helps AWS developers deploy agents that discover, make micropayments, and use services on their own. All with enterprise governance, built-in compliance, and instant USDC settlement on Base and Solana.”

Compliance and Monitoring via CDP Facilitator

Compliance features are managed through the Coinbase Developer Platform (CDP) Facilitator, which screens transactions for sanctions and illicit finance risks. Enterprises also gain access to detailed logs, metrics, and dashboards that track every payment initiated by agents from start to finish.

How x402 Works: HTTP-Triggered Stablecoin Payments

x402 is an open payment protocol introduced by Coinbase that enables instant automated stablecoin payments directly over HTTP. It utilizes the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code to facilitate machine-native transactions. According to Coinbase, settlement on Base with USDC takes approximately 200 milliseconds and costs less than a fraction of a cent per transaction. Through the Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration in Agentcore Gateway, agents can access x402-compatible services from providers such as Exa, Messari, and Browserbase, paying per runtime without subscriptions or checkout flows.

The x402 Foundation, which includes AWS, Coinbase, and other technology and payment companies, governs the protocol. Coinbase disclosed that over the past year, x402 has processed more than 169 million payments across over 590,000 buyers and more than 100,000 sellers.

Significance for AI and Crypto Convergence

This integration marks a major milestone in merging AI agents with crypto payment infrastructure. By equipping autonomous agents with native wallets and micropayment capabilities, enterprises can build more intelligent and automated workflows while maintaining financial compliance and transparency. Coinbase commented on social media: “Every agent deserves a wallet. So we’re helping every dev on Amazon Bedrock Agentcore give their agents one. Autonomous spending, budget controls, built-in compliance, and USDC settlement on Base. This is the future, powered by x402.”
