On August 5, 2025, Coinbase announced the beta launch of "Embedded Wallets," a suite of APIs designed to let developers integrate self-custodial crypto wallets directly into their applications. Part of the Coinbase Developer Platform (CDP), the tool leverages the same core security infrastructure used by Coinbase's trading products.

Key Features: Simplified Onboarding, No Seed Phrases

Embedded Wallets enable Web2-style logins such as email, SMS, or OAuth, eliminating the need for users to manage seed phrases or download separate browser extensions. According to Coinbase, developers can generate a wallet tied to an email in under 200 milliseconds by running a single command: npm create @coinbase/cdp-app.

The wallets provide access to Coinbase's mission-critical infrastructure and security suite, which isolates operations and secures keys within Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs). The unified API stack handles transfers, trades, balances, staking, and rewards—including 4.1% annual rewards on USDC.

Incentives and Early Use Cases

To accelerate adoption during the beta phase, Coinbase is offering free usage of Embedded Wallets for Coinbase Onramp customers until September 30, 2025. Potential use cases highlighted include remittance apps, DeFi marketplaces, B2B payroll systems, creator economy platforms, and gaming ecosystems. Examples such as Zylu and Stablelink are already using the technology for instant cross-border payments and simplified donation flows.

The wallet also includes built-in fiat onramp and token swap capabilities. Developers can access comprehensive documentation covering advanced functions like token transfers and swaps.

This launch marks a significant step for Coinbase in lowering barriers for both developers and end-users, potentially bringing millions of new users into the crypto ecosystem by abstracting away the complexity of private key management.
