San Francisco-based crypto exchange Coinbase has launched a new web application for its wallet, designed to unify users' onchain asset management across multiple wallets and blockchains. The Coinbase Wallet Web App, announced on July 11, 2024, allows users to connect third-party wallets such as MetaMask and Phantom alongside Coinbase’s own smart wallet, and view their entire portfolio — including cryptocurrencies, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and decentralized finance (DeFi) positions — in a single interface.

Multi-Chain Aggregation and Trading

The web app supports trading over 2 million tokens across eight different blockchains and provides a 360-degree portfolio view. This eliminates the need for users to maintain manual spreadsheets or switch between multiple browser tabs to track their holdings. In addition, creators can mint and share NFTs directly within the platform, leveraging built-in tools for the first time.

Smart Wallet and Gasless Features

Coinbase has integrated its smart wallet technology into the new app, enabling gasless transactions for select minting events and direct onchain payments from Coinbase accounts. This reduces friction for newcomers unfamiliar with gas fees or private key management. “By consolidating your wallets and providing a comprehensive 360-degree view of your portfolio, we aim to reduce inefficiencies and frustrations,” a Coinbase spokesperson told Bitcoin.com News. “Plus, with the simplicity of smart wallets, users can get onchain and engage in minting, creating, or trading in seconds.”

Strategic Significance

The launch is part of Coinbase’s broader strategy to integrate its onchain products into a seamless user experience. As the crypto landscape becomes increasingly fragmented across multiple chains and wallet solutions, aggregator tools like Coinbase’s new web app can help bridge the gap for mainstream users. By offering a regulated, user-friendly gateway to DeFi and NFTs, Coinbase aims to attract both seasoned crypto investors and newcomers, potentially accelerating the broader adoption of onchain activities.

Industry analysts note that the app’s support for non-Coinbase wallets marks a significant shift from a “walled garden” approach to a more open ecosystem. The decision to include MetaMask and Phantom reflects Coinbase’s recognition that users want flexibility without sacrificing security or ease of use. As of now, the web app is available to all Coinbase Wallet users, with additional features expected in future updates.
