Adoption news keeps flowing this week. The largest U.S. cryptocurrency bank, Coinbase, has announced the expansion of its commerce section by releasing a WooCommerce plugin available on GitHub. This move could help millions of online merchants embrace cryptocurrency payments.
WooCommerce Powers Over a Quarter of Online Merchants
WooCommerce is one of the most popular payment platforms, used by more than 25% of all online merchants. Coinbase's new plugin integrates seamlessly, allowing merchants to accept crypto payments globally. “This increased access will lead to more widespread adoption and moves us closer to an open financial system,” Coinbase emphasized.
BTC and LTC Live; ETH and BCH in Testing
Currently, Bitcoin Core (BTC) and Litecoin (LTC) are supported on Coinbase Commerce. Ethereum (ETH) and Bitcoin Cash (BCH) integrations are being tested. The team plans to roll out full support soon. Merchants can start accepting these digital assets immediately after installing the plugin.
Zero Fees to Attract Merchants
Coinbase charges no payment processing fees for its Commerce service. The platform also offers embeddable React buttons and supports Python, with Ruby integration under consideration. These features lower the barrier for merchants to adopt crypto payments.
Coinbase’s 2018 Expansion Spree
This plugin is part of a broader strategy. Coinbase has launched institutional products, a crypto index fund, obtained the New York BitLicense, acquired Paradax exchange, and is eyeing Japan. The payment processing market is massive—Wall Street’s Bakkt (backed by Microsoft and Starbucks) is a testament. Despite growing competition, Coinbase leverages its early mover advantage, strong brand trust, and regulatory licenses to stay ahead.
Industry observers believe this plugin could be a key driver for merchant cryptocurrency adoption. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
