Coinbase Global (NASDAQ: COIN) posted third-quarter results that crushed Wall Street expectations, with net income surging 473% year-over-year. The exchange also deepened its bitcoin exposure by adding 2,772 BTC through weekly purchases, signaling unwavering conviction in digital assets.
Earnings Beat on Surging Trading Activity
For the quarter ending September 30, 2025, Coinbase reported net income of $432.6 million ($1.50 per share), compared with $75.5 million ($0.28 per share) a year earlier. Analysts had forecast earnings of approximately $1.10 per share. Total revenue reached $1.87 billion, up 54.5% from $1.21 billion last year, driven by a 37% quarter-over-quarter increase in transaction revenue to $1.05 billion.
Retail trading volume rose 37% to $59 billion, while institutional volume climbed 22% to $236 billion. Institutional transaction revenue hit $135 million, a 122% jump from the prior quarter, highlighting the growing importance of institutional clients.
Bitcoin Holdings Expand to 14,548 BTC
Coinbase’s quarterly report revealed it purchased 2,772 bitcoins worth approximately $299 million through a systematic weekly buying program in Q3. This brings its total bitcoin holdings to 14,548 BTC, valued at over $1.2 billion at current prices. The accumulation strategy, initiated in 2024, reflects the exchange’s long-term bullish stance on the leading cryptocurrency.
CEO Brian Armstrong stated: “We believe every asset class is coming on-chain. Our expansion into bitcoin accumulation and diversified asset trading is part of building the financial infrastructure for the next generation of markets.” The acquisition of derivatives exchange Deribit also strengthened Coinbase’s footprint in the crypto derivatives market, an area where it previously lagged rivals.
Beyond Trading: The ‘Everything Exchange’ Vision
Armstrong emphasized that Coinbase’s strategy now extends beyond crypto trading to its broader vision of becoming an “everything exchange,” integrating tokenized equities, prediction markets, and on-chain financial instruments. “The lines between traditional and digital assets are blurring, and Coinbase aims to be the central hub for this convergence,” he said.
Analysts attribute Coinbase’s strong performance to the broader crypto market recovery and accelerating institutional adoption. With spot bitcoin ETFs attracting steady inflows, exchanges like Coinbase benefit directly as critical infrastructure for trading and custody. However, the company also flagged risks including regulatory uncertainty, market volatility, and competition from decentralized exchanges. Management remains confident in the long-term outlook and continues to invest in technology and compliance.
