Cryptocurrency exchange giant Coinbase has announced its intention to build a 'crypto app store' inspired by Apple's successful App Store model. In a blog post published Tuesday, CEO Brian Armstrong outlined several strategic opportunities for the Nasdaq-listed company, with the app store being a central pillar. 'Apple didn’t attempt to build every app for the iPhone, it empowered developers and gave mobile users an easy way to access new innovative apps,' Armstrong noted.
From Exchange to Ecosystem Platform
Armstrong emphasized that the explosion of decentralized applications (Dapps) is reminiscent of the early days of the internet and mobile app stores. 'There is now tens of billions of dollars of economic activity running on Dapps, and a new trend coming out every three months,' he wrote. Coinbase aims to aggregate these innovations under one roof, allowing users to seamlessly discover and use crypto-based services without leaving the Coinbase ecosystem.
Self-Custody and Dapp Access
The CEO stated that 'soon any app built on decentralized crypto rails will be accessible to users of the Coinbase app.' Furthermore, users will have the option to self-custody their crypto assets directly within the main Coinbase application, bridging the gap between centralized convenience and decentralized control. This move signals a significant shift for Coinbase, positioning it as a gateway to the broader decentralized web.
Implications and Outlook
By adopting an Apple-like strategy, Coinbase is betting on a developer-first ecosystem. If successful, the platform could attract thousands of developers to build on its infrastructure, creating a virtuous cycle of innovation. However, challenges remain: regulatory hurdles, security risks, and the inherent tension between a centralized platform and the ethos of decentralization. Industry observers believe this initiative could lower barriers for mainstream users and accelerate the maturation of the crypto industry, much like the App Store did for mobile computing.
