Coinbase Ventures has taken its first position in Ethena by buying ENA tokens on the open market, not through a discounted private deal. At the same time, Coinbase and Ethena said they are partnering to build onchain finance and savings products for more than 100 million users. Their first joint growth initiative is expected next week, though neither side shared details on the structure.
The move gives Coinbase Ventures its first direct exposure to Ethena. The announcement was precise on one point and silent on others: the tokens were purchased in the market, but the size of the ENA purchase was not disclosed, and no financial terms tied to the partnership were released. That leaves the market with a clear signal of support, but little information on scale.
Partnership centers on onchain finance products
Coinbase Ventures described Ethena as an important participant in onchain finance, arriving at a time when blockchain-based financial products are drawing demand from both retail and institutional users. The new partnership is framed around expanding access to those tools rather than around a single product launch.
Ethena is best known for its synthetic dollar protocol USDe and its yield-bearing product sUSDe, which gives users access to returns generated through crypto-native strategies. If future products reach Coinbase’s distribution network and infrastructure, Ethena could gain a much broader channel to users. For Coinbase, the deal also adds to its growing exposure to decentralized finance infrastructure. The report noted that the exchange had already deepened its presence in the Hyperliquid ecosystem and expanded its derivatives business after receiving regulatory approvals.
Ethena’s scale stands out in DeFi metrics
Data from DeFiLlama cited in the announcement shows Ethena with about $5.4 billion in total value locked. Since launch, the protocol has generated roughly $983 million in cumulative fees. Those figures place Ethena among the larger revenue-producing protocols in DeFi and help explain why a strategic partnership with a major exchange carries weight.
Guy Young, Ethena’s head, said the evolving CLARITY Act could open additional room for onchain-native products, including USDe. He added that the protocol is positioned for potential shifts related to idle balances sitting on exchanges. Ethena’s backers include Franklin Templeton, Pantera Capital, Polychain Capital, Dragonfly Capital, and Binance Labs. DeFiLlama records show the project has raised about $166 million across multiple funding rounds.
