Coinbase Ventures was the most active crypto venture investor in the first half of 2026, completing 30 investments despite a weak market, according to data cited by Cointelegraph and carried by Odaily. Animoca Brands followed with 19 deals, while Andreessen Horowitz, or a16z, completed 18 and Tether participated in 15. Looking at the last 12 months, Coinbase Ventures completed 75 investments, keeping its lead across the sector. Animoca Brands logged 40 deals, followed by YZi Labs with 39, GSR with 31, and a16z with 30.

July funding totals and sector focus

So far in July, the crypto industry has recorded 12 funding rounds worth about $456 million in total.

Over the past six months, Coinbase Ventures focused mainly on payments protocols, decentralized finance, and infrastructure. The firm joined seven funding rounds for payments projects, four DeFi rounds, and three rounds tied to infrastructure and real-world asset, or RWA, tokenization.

DeFi, payments, and AI drew the most capital

By sector, DeFi attracted the strongest funding interest over the past year, followed by payments and AI.

  • Payments projects completed 131 rounds
  • Crypto-AI projects recorded 128 rounds

Number of independent investors declined

The data also showed that while top firms remained active, the number of market participants has been shrinking. The number of independent investment firms fell to 242 in June, down from 452 in October 2025. That points to a more concentrated capital base during the bear market.
