CoinShares says quantum computing should be treated as a long-term issue for Bitcoin, not an immediate security emergency. In the firm’s view, quantum machines may one day challenge some of the cryptographic tools used by the network, but the hardware needed for a practical attack is still far away.

The question matters because Bitcoin secures trillions of dollars in value. Even so, current evidence points to a future engineering problem rather than a near-term breakdown in network security.

Which Parts of Bitcoin Could Be Affected

Bitcoin relies on two core layers of cryptography: digital signatures that authorize transactions and cryptographic hashing that protects addresses and supports mining. CoinShares says advanced quantum algorithms could theoretically weaken parts of this system, including scenarios where attackers derive private keys from public keys that have already been exposed.

That exposure would not apply evenly across the network. Most modern Bitcoin addresses do not reveal their public keys until coins are spent, which leaves them shielded before that point. Older address formats that expose public keys account for only a small share of total supply, limiting the scale of any early damage.

Current Quantum Hardware Is Still Far From Practical

According to CoinShares, breaking Bitcoin’s encryption would require quantum computers with millions of highly stable qubits. Today’s systems are only a tiny fraction of what would be needed for that kind of task.

Researchers cited in the report estimate that a usable quantum attack could still be a decade or more away. That timeline gives developers, wallet providers, and holders room to prepare instead of reacting under immediate pressure.

Open-Source Design Leaves Room for Upgrades

CoinShares argues that Bitcoin’s open-source structure gives the network a path to adapt through software upgrades, including the possible adoption of quantum-resistant signature schemes. The issue, in that sense, is not whether Bitcoin can change, but how and when such changes should be introduced.

Even under a very optimistic scenario for quantum progress, analysts say only a limited pool of older coins would likely be exposed quickly enough to affect market liquidity. Any wider market effect would probably emerge over time, allowing investors and wallet users to move funds into safer address formats.

Gradual Migration Preferred Over Rapid Protocol Changes

CoinShares also cautions against aggressive or premature protocol changes. Moving too fast could introduce fresh risks, including software bugs and unnecessary disruption to the network.

Its preferred approach is a gradual transition toward quantum-resistant technology as the research becomes more mature. For investors, the main message is straightforward: quantum risk is real, but for the foreseeable future it remains manageable rather than a present-day crisis.
